Google caters to the Foodies

Google has won me over once again, as they now offer Recipe Search. There are tons of good resources for recipes online and many which I use. AllRecipes.com, the Epicurious iPad App, and so on. All of these places are good at what they do, so why does this Google search draw me in?

It draws me in because it is in a place I always am. I’m always searching for something, so why not food as well. When you watch the video you will see that there are many options you can put in place to narrow down your search. For example here is a link to a search I did for potatoes with parmesan cheese with only 30 minutes prep time and under 300 calories.

Even though my collection of Company’s Coming recipe books is growing I still foresee myself using this Google Search when I want to try and cook something different. What about you?

Erika Lange and her Hats

I have been wanting to get into more portrait photography for a while now, but have always lacked a subject. I’m not confident enough with myself to pursue it yet without fooling around and seeing what I come up with. This was my chance to practice, with Erika who approached me about the idea.

Serious Erika

Erika recently got some new hat or as we Canadians like to refer these head toppers as, toques, and wanted some pictures with the hats. I thought sure why not, I need to improve on my skills. The other thing I have often struggled with when it comes to portrait photography, is location. I don’t know the area too well and am sometimes unsure as to where to go. Luckily, Erika did. She live in what they call the Old Fort. It is one of the original Fort St. Johns, yes there were many, before it moved up and out of the valley of the Peace River. So surrounding her house is forest with trails that lead to the river, perfect for photos.

Personally I like candid photos better. I like catching moments, not having to try to create them. I think a photo will make a bigger impact on the viewer if the subject isn’t looking at the camera, as if it isn’t even their. That being said, if a person want to expand the opportunities they must be diverse and that is my plan. I will admit I did start getting into the shoot when I started directing Erika where to look, where to point her head and watching how the light was hitting her face. I’m improving, I promise. Who is next?

Cabin in the Woods

On Saturday of this past week I took a quick drive out to Charlie Lake in attempt to capture some of the fresh snow. While I got over 100 shots of the snow and frozen lake, I got this one of a friend’s cabin. It has been tone-mapped to give it that HDR appearance.

All I want for Christmas

Okay this seems like a big list of things I want to get for Christmas, but my mom always gets mad at me because I am apparently difficult to shop for. My hope is this list will give her some idea, this list is also for me to remember some of the stuff I would like when I get some spare change.

Obviously there is a trend going on here. My latest hobby is trying to cook, it is a stress reliever for me and allows me to disconnect from everything else.

Dave Brosha is one of the photographers I have always looked up to. I taught me the basics of photography; knowledge which I use everyday. So why I find he such a great photographer is not only that he is a great photographer, but also that he is willing to teach those who want to learn.

Dave’s adventure started in the Resolute Bay, which is in the Canadian Arctic, where he wanted to started taking picture to showcase to his family back home. His photography slowly progressed and he also moved to Yellowknife, NT. He realized it was a passion and his and wanted to pursue it. He slowly took on clients and built up his name while still having the stability of a 9-to-5 job. Finally he took the plunge one day and quit his job and started doing photography full-time, he hasn’t looked back since.

Nowadays, Dave isn’t limited to Yellowknife, where he and his family lives. He has traveled as far north as Alert, as south Australia and has been to Egypt twice. He has traveled to these places on writing assignments for magazines or to document a friend living an adventure. He makes the point those that he is very fortunate to have the opportunities that he has had.

We go much more into detail about how his business grew and where he has been in the show. Dave also shares with me what is in his bag and who inspires him. So be sure to listen.

Be sure to check out his website and his blog and is ever-growing Facebook Page.

Thanks for listening and don’t forget to Subscribe on iTunes or by Email here.

Don’t forget if you know someone doing something interesting (or another photographer or yourself) send me their info, I want to talk to them!

Jeep Reflection Photo

Here is something interesting I got. It is the reflection of the Charlie Lake shoreline on the side of my Jeep. I have seen many photographers do this type of photo in the summer in the lake itself. It works really well if water is very still. I should look into the theory behind reflection and the best way to capture them.
