Getting Firewood for the House
If there is one thing I miss about not living in this home is the woodstove. The heat from a woodstove is like no other. It is nice and warm and comforting. Furnace heat is nothing like it.
So while I’m here in Yellowknife for a couple weeks I keep the stove going all the time, which means I’m going through a lot more wood than normal, therefore have to bring in more on a daily basis.
I did make it
Oh yeah, sorry about that. I guess when you get caught up seeing family and being in a new place again you forget to document what is happening.
Made it in Sunday evening and had a family dinner. Yesterday I tried to get adjusted to working in my old office and what I was doing.
Of course since I haven’t been here in so long, everyone is calling and wanting to see you even though you need to focus.
Then of course I had to go get a cable I forgot and sure enough it doesn’t work for some reason. Now I need to make my way downtown again today.
Bah Humbug
It is Dry and Dark Up Here
One topic of conversation that has been arising is the winter in Fort St John. Yes they are like those in Yellowknife, which is 1000km north, but they aren’t quite the same. For me at least.
When some talk about how they lack of sun light is affecting them, I have no problem. To be totally honest I have never really even thought of it. I just get up in the morning, in the dark, and go to work. Then at 5pm when it starts to get dark again I go home. I don’t even have a very high Vitamin C in take. I don’t even know what it is I do that allows me to not be affected by the lack of like. I guess growing up in the NWT has provided me with the skill of not realizing it. I will note though that I am highly sensitive to light. Even though it is dark outside, I have big blankets on my windows to keep out any stray light from a light pole or vehicle.
The other side of this is the dry air. Sometimes this is a benefit to the north, as in, we don’t have to suffer those wet chilly condition like southern Canada, then again -40 in dry air with no wind chill is bitterly cold. Normally though the dry air affects everyones skin. Seems like everyone I know carries around lip chap and will even go to the extreme and get humidifiers. Me on the other hand, I don’t think I have every used lip chap. I actually find it gross. Again I don’t know why my skin does dry out. I do use the natural moisturizer, water.
Either I am completely weird or I am just adaptable. I remember when I worked night shift, I could go in and come out of working that shift like it was nothing. I couldn’t always, but the majority of the time I could.
Simple Yellowknife, Fort St John comparisons:
- Fort St John: -20 to Yellowknife: -40
- Fort St John: 8hrs light to Yellowknife: 6hrs light
Hello Grande Prairie Airport
8am is the time, and the Grande Prairie airport is the place. The drive from Fort St John is only 2 hours, but when road conditions are slightly unknown, you tend to plan for a large margin of error. So here I sit with an hour and a half wait until my flight boards.
I am flying Air Canada to Yellowknife, which is normal for me, as they seem to be the only ones who offer decent points flights. My first stop on this 3 flight adventure is Edmonton. Nothing exciting about this little jaunt at all. Us passengers all pile into a little Dash 8 and take off for an hour long flight. Because this flight is so, lets say, cramped I only listen to Podcasts. I don’t think there is room for me to to try and pull out the iPad let alone the MacBook Air.
As for my bag, well let me just say I am the worlds worst packer for flying. I always, always, pack to much and think I need more than I do. I was able to pick up a a large duffle bag in Jasper last weekend while there which is able to hold everything I packed. Where the dilemma comes in, is the weight. My bag weighed in a 57lbs. Which is 7lbs over the limit. I was under the impression that the overage fee was $30 for some reason. Well I was wrong. The overage fee is $75, HELLO. As I didn’t have a second bag to put some stuff in, as you are aloud two bag, I ended up taking out the MacBook Pro and just carrying it. Doing this brought the bag down to 48lbs. Now I’m going to be boarding my flight with two laptops and a iPad. Yes this is a little excessive and really just takes away from the whole light and easy to carry aspect of the Air and iPad. All is good though as I sit and wait.
It is good to be early I suppose. As I anxiously sit here and think about it. I rather be bored waiting to leave than rushing to catch the flight feeling panicked.
Off to the staff Christmas Party
I’m about to head off to the Motion Media Christmas party. Am really looking forward to it. Will be good people and lots of laughs. We are having it catered. A very talented Italian lady is going to make us some authentic Italian food, which I’m sure will include pizza, pasta and the works. I’m excited, as I love my food.
As this is the Christmas season, I want to share with you this little song I found:
On the first day of Christmas,
my true love sent to me
The Twitter bird in a pear tree.
On the second day of Christmas,
my true love sent to me
Two Magpie tweets,
And the Twitter bird in a pear tree.
On the third day of Christmas,
my true love sent to me
Three Brogan blog posts,
Two Magpie tweets,
And the Twitter bird in a pear tree.
On the fourth day of Christmas,
my true love sent to me
Four Facebook apps,
Three Brogan blog posts,
Two Magpie tweets,
And the Twitter bird in a pear tree.
