When I started YkOnline I made the choice to create its own Twitter account. Mainly because at that time I thought twitter was the greatest thing invented and I was full on driving the bandwagon. Nowadays I’m not so sure that was a good idea, but that is a different post, for another time.

What I want to get at is a plugin I quickly installed for YkOnline. What the plugin does is, every time a reader comments on a post on the blog, it then gets sent to the YkOnline Twitter account. The way I have it set up, its says “[NEW COMMENT] <Start of Comment> LINK TO COMMENT”.

The reasoning for doing this makes sense, to me anyways. The way I saw it was, I needed more content for the YkOnline Twitter account and I wanted it to always be related to Yellowknife/YkOnline. So by doing this I was letting the followers know of discussion going on back on the site. I saw nothing wrong with this. I figured one of the reasons people followed YkOnline on Twitter was because they wanted to be updated about new posts and new content and I see comments as content.

So for a couple months I didn’t think anything of it and didn’t do anything. Then one of my friends sent me a message directly about it, I guess it was the first time they had noticed it. At first I didn’t know if they liked it or not, which got me thinking about it. Was the way I was doing it actually spamming people! I sure hope not. This friends then told me they liked the idea and agreed with my reasoning behind it.

For those of you who use twitter or social networking sites as well as blog what is your take this situation? What you ever consider using a plugin like this?

Well I thought it was time for a new design. The old one was Grey (literally) so I wanted something more colourful and up lifting.

I think I found that in WooThemes Digital Farm. It still keeps the stereotypical blogging layout but adds some nice, easy to use features.

The header, which I did do myself, I got the idea from the demos header. Some say I’m not a rainbow type of guy but I think I will keep it for now as it really brighten up the look.

One of the big things as well is the revamping of the categories. I have added more in hopes I will write more here about what it is I do online all the time. But as it stands I hardly have anytime for that anymore so adding in writing about it just might not happen.

Enjoy.

My eyes are sore and I have looked over hundreds of WordPress themes but have not found one I like. The problem being, I know exactly what I am looking for and it doesn’t appear to be very common.

So this is where I need your help. I am looking for a theme with a specific header layout. I’m not quiet sure as to how to explain what I am looking for but I will give it a shot and then include some screen shots.

In the header.php I need to it be laid out in this order starting from the top of the page. 1. page navigation, horizontally aligned. 2. (directly below the page nav.) a header image with/ without the title of the blog in it. 3. (directly below image) category navigation, horizontally aligned. (preferably with drop-down child categories).

First example:

Second Example (ignore the fact the images is the proper size):

So if you have seen a WordPress site like this or know a theme that might fit the description let me know in a comment below or on twitter @kylewith.

Thanks

A friend is looking at how to have his blog posts or snippets of the posts from his blog show up on his homepage which is a static html page.

I have found one way of doing this which involves the RSS feed. Most people use FeedBurner to maintain their RSS feed because it offers some many thing for customizing and promoting you feed. If you do not already use FeedBurner I suggest you check it out. It is very simple to set up, it is run by Google so you can use your Google account for it. Then all you have to do is set up a new feed by entering in your old one.

Once you have done that you want to click on the Publicize and then BuzzBoost, which is built into the feedburner site. BuzzBoost is the tool used to publish your posts on to your static page. You can change the settings to however you like and then activate or save it. It will then give you the code you need to use on your HTML page for the posts to show up.

Example:

Subscribe to RSS headline updates from:
Powered by FeedBurner

The script can be configure by you to the shape desired to fit where ever you need it to. I have the same script in both, above and in the sidebar(wont be in the sidebar forever)

That’s it, simple right? You are also able to delete the FeedBurner logo by simply taking it out of the script.
