Playing Local Music
Posted in Random on 29. Jan, 2010
I’m always thinking of new Podcasts to do. Ways to grow the community, and I’m always looking for ways to promote local talent. Music being one of those talents. Yellowknife has a wide selection of music and although I haven’t heard much of it due to my lack of bar going I know it is good stuff.
My idea for a show would simply be a weekly or monthly one hour show featuring local songs. Mixing it up show to show, although I sure I would ended up repeating myself after 8 weeks of music. Anyways, I think this is a great idea but the thing that stumps me is copyright laws. I value that these artist took the time and money to make these albums and I don’t want to rip them off by any means but I think it would be awesome none the less to show off there talent.
I’m not looking to get the rights to play any music I want, although that would be awesome, but expensive, I just want to show off the local music talent Yellowknife has. Does anyone know how I might go about doing this? I realize it will cost some money, the artists do need to be reimbursed, but I don’t know how much and I don’t know what the appropriate channels are to go through.
How would you go about trying to do this? If any local musicians read this, how would you prefer a person wanting to play your music online go about approaching you and how would you like to be compensated?

Why don’t you invite musicians in monthly (or weekly) to record something acoustic in your studio and then use ykonline.ca to promote them or their upcoming show or album? i’m sure a lot of people would be happy to do it.
If you ask them, they’re usually fine with it – at no cost. Usually they’ll just make you buy the song from iTunes or whatever and then that’s it. It works out great because they want the promotion and you want the music.
Good luck with that.
For a local podcast I don’t think any local musicians would have a problem giving you permission to play they’re music as long as you buy a copy. At least we don’t!
