Playing Local Music

I’m always thinking of new Podcasts to do. Ways to grow the community, and I’m always looking for ways to promote local talent. Music being one of those talents. Yellowknife has a wide selection of music and although I haven’t heard much of it due to my lack of bar going I know it is good stuff.

My idea for a show would simply be a weekly or monthly one hour show featuring local songs. Mixing it up show to show, although I sure I would ended up repeating myself after 8 weeks of music. Anyways, I think this is a great idea but the thing that stumps me is copyright laws. I value that these artist took the time and money to make these albums and I don’t want to rip them off by any means but I think it would be awesome none the less to show off there talent.

I’m not looking to get the rights to play any music I want, although that would be awesome, but expensive, I just want to show off the local music talent Yellowknife has. Does anyone know how I might go about doing this? I realize it will cost some money, the artists do need to be reimbursed, but I don’t know how much and I don’t know what the appropriate channels are to go through.

How would you go about trying to do this? If any local musicians read this, how would you prefer a person wanting to play your music online go about approaching you and how would you like to be compensated?

Tweeting What I Want

Not to name, names and they do have there own opinions but if you don’t like all the talk about the new Apple product just shot off Twitter for the day.

Here is my opinion on this kind of thing. I like to think it is a passion of mine to keep up with the tech news and especially Apple News. I like Apple’s stuff, I don’t know why but I do and I don’t want to try and defend it. I just do, and shouldn’t need too. Anyways when I see people complaining about how there are to many tweets about the Apple announcement I think they need to step back for a second. Obviously there is a reason for all the tweet and I know there are multiples of the same things but when it comes to Social Media and Tech this is a big thing. Hell Apple kept saying “The Internet in your hands”.

If people are tweeting about it, it is because they want to and are passionate about it. My advise to those who don’t like all the tweet is unfollow or turn twitter off for the period of the hype. In a couple day it will all go away and we’ll move on to the next big thing.

I’m just say’n!

Went out to the Cabin

I decided today I needed to find out the shape of The Cabin. So I took off by myself to the hidden cover on the shore of Great Slave Lake about 15km south of Yellowknife. It was peaceful and quiet. I got some stuff done around camp. Like actually digging out the front door, which was covered in snow. I broke a new trail to the cabin from the lake in by foot so when I go out again the snow will be hard packed enough for my snowmobile to drive over it. Much easier than trying to drive through a narrow path in 3ft of power snow.

There definitely was lots of power snow. While looking for the new path in I ended up getting stuck. Stuck good. The sled was completely cover in snow. A took a moment and caught my breath and slowly and comely dug it out and was able to carefully drive it out without getting stuck… again. Lesson learned, always drive faster.

Here is a quick video I shot while out there. Do you have a special get away you go to for peace and quiet?

Episode 07: Playing with new equipment

Subscribe via iTunes

You all know I get some new Podcasting/Audio equipment last week, well I have been trying to set it up and get it going properly. It hasn’t been working as well as I hoped. I seem to be having issues with getting the mic loud enough to record my voice with out taking in all the noise around me.

I think some of the problem is how I am recording it to the computer, I’m using a usb device that came with the mixer. I may just try a direct line in and out and see how that goes.

Anyone with any expertise out there want to offer some advice? It would be much appreciated.
