Couple of Days in & out of Dawson Creek

Man it is hard to get Internet here in Dawson Creek. They offer free WiFi in the downtown core but for some reason it isn’t working and I haven’t hooked up the Internet in my apartment. But anyways.

Yesterday seems like a blur, as I didn’t do much. I lay in my camper for most of the morning listening to the rain falling and pound onto the tin roof. Finally venturing into the house when the rain stopped around noon my brother and I set off to town. The 45 minute drive was delayed a lovely 30 minutes because of road construction but it wouldn’t be summer with out it. Once we arrived in town I convinced my brother to help me unload my truck at my apartment before disappearing to the skatepark. When we finished unpacking the truck it was about 3 o’clock and by that point it was very hot outside. Just standing in one spot was making me sweet. I started to sort out my “crap” and put it in place. My loving mother had packed me some dry food and kitchen for stuff and I hadn’t realized how much stuff it really was. I ended up with multiple boxes of hamburger helper, packs of sidekick noodles, 4 jars of peanut butter as well as 3 jars of her homemade strawberry jam (keep an eye out for her at the craft sales this Christmas season) and much more stuff.

Soon enough 4:30 rolled around Bev showed up at the apartment and helped me move in the bigger stuff while we waited for Ken to get off work. We then picked up Taylor and Ken and split up into the 2 vehicles again and left town. Of course on our way back to East Pine we got caught in the construction again, but no biggy.

The evening was a nice, cool, relax one in the house and we had the famous ribs the literally fall off the bone. The rest of the night was uneventful and I felt exhausted but couldn’t think of why because I really didn’t do much.

As I think about it now I wasn’t online much yesterday even when it was available. I think the trick is to cut yourself off cold turkey and then you won’t see the need to always be online. Ha. I bet that will change again when I get internet in my place.

Well that was yesterday and now is the today.

We (my brother and I) had to head up to Fort St. John to he could catch a plane to Vancouver for his skateboarding tour. I had set my alarm for 8am and we were going to leave by 9am. So when the alarm on my phone went off at 8am I got up and went into the house to wake my brother. Upon doing so he yelled at me exclaiming that it was only 7am. Confused and not convinced I spent a good 15 minutes searching for something that would have the proper time. Realizing the landline phone had the time on it and sure enough it was only 7:15. Not caring that I had gotten up early I left my brother along and proceded throwing stuff into the truck to take to the apartment later in the day.

The drive to the Fort St. John Airport was quick, as I didn’t have to go through any construction sites. They have a really nice airport, a slight bit smaller than Yellowknife’s but very modern. We waited for a while and then it was time for Taylor to board he did, nervously though as he doesn’t like flying at all let along by himself. I took off south to Dawson Creek and when I arrived in town a mire hour and 15 minutes I got a text proclaiming he had landed and had a good flight.

While in Dawson this afternoon I managed to set up my bed frame as well as my complex desk. After doing that I decided I was too hot and needed something cold and thought about the newly open café 30 seconds from my apartment. I also was hoping they would have Internet as well but no such luck. So instead I sit here in the somewhat air condition café sipping a Strawberry Italian Soda typing this out in Word.

That is all for this update, hopefully next time I have an update I will be able to publish it as soon as I write it. But until then I will go back to my apartment and clean up and head back out to East Pine half hour a head of the Wiebes.

Drive from Yellowknife to Grande Prairie

This will be quick as I do not have the patients to write out an elaborate post tonight. So this will be more of a photo blog.

All packed and ready to go the night before.

At 5am Yellowknife look like it was going to be a nice day.

This was a neat photo I randomly caught crossing the bridge at Rae.

DSC_0025

We saw lots of buffalo on the road, lots of which were just standing on the road.

There was still lots of bridge construction going on.

The ferry ride was uneventful. I think I have lived in the north to long.

The wee town of Grimshaw.

I normally try and take photos of the beautiful Dunvagan Valley but because the construction on the bridge, which I am fairly certain has been happening for 3 years now, I wanted to focus on driving.

This was our little set up in the Grande Prairie campground. I thought it was very redneck to have a lazy boy and computer chair set up outside.

I was always uncertain as to how much the bunk could hold. I think there was about 200lbs on it and it didn’t collapse on my brother so it must be decent.

We spent most of today in Grande Prairie shopping and skateboarding. We also drove over to Wembley to check out a new skatepark we were told about. I must say for a small farming town, it was a pretty nice.

Note* We got to Dawson as well today and I was able to get my apartment. I will put up another post with picture tomorrow.

Scratch that, Take Two.

Remember that Rough Plan I mentioned about a month ago, well that is completely wrong know. I’m actually leaving Yellowknife at 5am July 28. So this is my last night in Yellowknife for 10 months.

It has been a slice but I need to go explore a little more in order to remember why I live in Yellowknife.

Today I spent the entire day running around town and packing. This morning I finally decided it was probably a good idea to renew my insurance and ragistration so off I went. The insurance was easy, all I had to do was phone TD Trust and have them set it up. Getting the registration for my truck was a little longer process. After making sure I had all the proper papers and information (something a lot of people don’t do) I made my way to the DMV. Unfortunately I didn’t get as lucky as I use to be, there was about 20 people ahead of me. I grabbed my number tab and decided to kill some time by wondering the mall all the while checking the time to make sure I wasn’t too long. Once back at the DMV it was a quick 5 minute wait and I was out of there.

Once home I put my mind on packing. First I washed my truck so it was nice and clean in order to get dirty tomorrow, then I slowly started to strategically pack my desk, bed frame, bed, bins of clothes and other junk.

Finally here we are 10om and everything is packed. Picture will be up in a day or too.

I hope to update here every evening as to where I am and what I am doing so make sure to check back.

My Mind is Racing with Ideas

I feel like my mind is racing so fast that I can’t take the time to stop and blog about it. So I am going to try really hard here right at this moment to stay focused on writing this.

Couple things that I have been pondering and watching this morning are the development of YkOnline and the Blogathon that is happening in Vancouver as well as all over the world over the next 24 hours.

I will start this with YkOnline. It has yet to be written in stone as to what I want the site to be, although it does seem to be something. I have been watching several other “community” blogs trying to taken in how they are built and maintained. Ones such as BlogTO and Beyond Robson which are Fresh Daily blogs, Torontoist and The Coast. These are all well established sites, run by several people and catered to 100x more people than Yellowknife’s population. But I believe that someday soon with some dedication I can get the site to become not only a great site for locals but also a resourceful site for people researching about moving to Yellowknife. I’m facing some challenges as I have to leave the north for 8 months for school but I know in the long run it is a good thing and will only help with the site but in the mean time I don’t want it to die. I will have more details about YkOnline soon.

As for the Blogathon, this has got me excited. I absolutely love the idea. I’m watching a lot of Vancouver bloggers do it right now. Check it out at Blogathon.org and consider donating. What is happing, is several bloggers have gotten together (you don’t have to, but they have chosen to this time around) and will be blogging for 24 hours straight. They will each publish a post every 30 minutes about what ever they like. Each blogger has their own charities they are getting pledges for. Some of the bloggers are writing about their charities and why they are blogging for them, while others have themes to go off of.

My mind is flying with ideas and possibilities for a Yellowknife Blogathon. I am just imagining all the local bloggers getting together at Javaroma or some other local for 24 hours of blogging. Now I’m not sure if Yellowknife’s Bloggers get enough recognition but I still think it would be fun and worth it for the charities.

Got a comment or suggestion about either of these things. I would love to know.

Lost in my Mess

Where have you been? Where Huh, because I have been lost in my own mess.

I began packing my room the other day for my move and it is slow going. As I am taking my massive desk I had to clean it out. That is what takes the time. I never know what to throw out and what to keep. Half the stuff in there I haven’t used for over a year. Eventually I got it cleaned out and now I’m in the process of taking it apart to pack.

Seems like every time I need to pack or get rid of stuff the mess just explodes. I go from having lots of floor space to instantly none.

I go back to work tonight so for the next 5 days so I will have limited time to pack everything. Talk about last minute. I will let you know how it goes.
