Yellowknife Restaurant on Twitter #yzf

Good Afternoon kind folk of Yellowknife.

I am writing post not only to inform you but also to congratulate Yummy or Yummy’s (the little reasonably priced place to eat in the old Polar Parkas building, was in the Yellowknifer a while back) on joining Twitter. As of now it seems they will be posting up there daily specials and what not. I am hoping they become a valued member of out #yzf community.

It also appears that they are working on there website which I’m happy to say is a WordPress site (Its not like I’m a WordPress guru or anything). I hope they come up with ideas such as the ones I had in my Coffee Shop Online article. It would be great to see this little business taking the lead in Social Networking here in Yellowknife.

Yellowknifes Social Networking Grows, Plan a Event

Social Media and Networking in Yellowknife is slowly growing, whether it be on Twitter, Facebook or NWT Blogs. The momentum is there and we are heading on up the hill chanting “yes we can, yes we can”

With the online community of Yellowknife growing the events are close behind. The Yellowknife Bloggers from NWTBlogs have already held 3 meet ups. While a “yktweetup” may be in the near future. These events are a wonderful experience to put a face to the handles of the people you interact with on a daily bases.

While to those just coming for the party don’t find it a lot of work, it may be a different story for the host. Will people like it, is the place clean, is the food any good, etc. Therefore I have found a simple How-to Guide to throwing a Social Media Shin Dig: HOW TO: Plan and Promote Events With Social Media

CJCD Join the Radio Revolution

Dear CJCD,

How have you been? I haven’t heard you in a while. I just popped over to your website again and saw that nothing has changed and wasn’t surprised. Guys, do you still want to be the best radio station of the north? I’m sure you do that’s why I think it would be wise to invest a little time into revamping your website.

I recently started following a host from CKLB on twitter and from there was lead to their website and I was quite impressed.

Not only did it have a fresh looking design, it was also interactive. Listeners are able to comment and give their opinion on content that has been posted by the hosts. Which I think is big for people, especially in today’s world when everyone has something to say. Did you know CJCD, that you can also stream their radio station online? While it is live! I know that’s why I don’t listen to you anymore. I don’t have a radio handy while I’m working or at home, all I have is the Internet. Most stations these days offer steaming online, from local stations such as CKLB to Sirius and XM Satellite Radio. I think it would be work looking into nonetheless.

Another little tip I have for you to consider would be making your News stories that you put up on your supposed website into a RSS feed. Doing this will only benefit you. I’m sure it would be easier to put online and with a RSS feed people would be more inclined to reading it. They would be able to still view it off your website (I guess if they really still wanted to) but they would also be able to subscribe to the feed either via e-mail or Feed Reader. By making it more accessible and easier to read you are more than likely going to gain a larger loyal following.

If you wanted to go the extra mile or 1.609 kilometer with the RSS feed you could go on over to Twitter and make yourself an account and syndicate your feed with your account. So when you publish a breaking news article or any article for that matter your followers would know right away. You could also make the account more personal and be like Fort St. John’s @derrickhand from 101.5 The Bear who tweets promotions, releases, advertising, etc. for his followers.

Well I can only hope you consider some of these ideas as they are all completely beneficial to you.

Coffee Shop Online

Why Coffee Shops should be online.

Let me give you a brief reason as to why I have come up with this statement.
Many moons ago when I worked in a coffee shop, like most of you know by now. I would constantly have regular customers come down from their cubical (or office) and ask what kinds of coffee there were for the day. On the occasion there would be somebody who wouldn’t get a cup because they didn’t like anything and that is understandable. I have had new customers who have never been to the shop before have been amazed at the selection of beans, and other trinkets.

That is why Coffee Shops should consider using the Internet to let their loyal customers know what is going on for the day. Here are a few ideas
First lets look at a blog. A blog can be free and is easy to setup or if the shop already has a website a blog can be easily integrated. Once you have a blog setup it doesn’t take more than 5 minutes to quickly make a post with the day’s coffees and specials. On top of that you can keep customers up to date with things like when a new shipment of coffee beans has come in or if the Espresso machine breaks and you only have coffee for the rest of the day. The nice thing about a blog is you can put in the details about what it is you a posting about. You can describe that smooth lovable favorite specialty of the day or explain that the Espresso machine blew a seal and you got steamed milk all down the front of your pants. Either way a blog is a good way to tell your customers in detail what is going on.
The second thing I want to talk about is Twitter. Call me a geek if you want but Twitter could, and is, a very good information tool for a Coffee Shop or any business. You could go about it basically the same as a blog. Twitter is free; you can’t pay for it even if you wanted to. Go to twitter.com and sign up now. With Twitter you don’t have to worry about a website, to get to your Twitter page is simple. It would be www.twitter.com/COFFEESHOPEXAMPLE and anyone can see it, even if they don’t have there own Twitter account. Unlike a blog you have to keep it brief, fewer than 140 characters but that’s all right because on the upside you can update it more often and quicker. The beauty with Twitter is you can update it from the web, from a desktop client and from your mobile phone. The phone would be the key one here. So when your jumping around because the seal on the Espresso machine blew, and you have steamed milk down the front of your pants you can still text twitter and let everyone know the machine is down.

There you have it a simple reason why Coffee Shops should be online and a simple solution. With many younger people working at Coffee Shops it is almost a guarantee they have had a blog or been on twitter so why not approach them with one of these ideas? Could you imagine ordering a coffee via Twitter (I know Starbucks does something similar already)? It would be just another way to use social networking and technology in our everyday lives. Mind you I always enjoyed conversation with customers………….

Twitter a Yellowknife Tweetup with #yktweetup

The last couple days I have been annoying the wonderful twitter people of Yellowknife with this question. Which do you prefer for the hashtag (hashtag being #, and is used in front of key words for the Twitter Search) #yellowknifetweetup #yzftweetup or #yktweetup? After the first day it was clear no one wanted #yellowknifetweetup as it was to long. So I reasked the question with out that one. What I found got back was 5 for #yktweetup and 2 for #yzftweetup. So I am unofficially naming the hashtag used to refer to a Yellowknife Tweetup be #yktweetup. But just so where clear the # for Yellowknife is still #yzf and the tweetup # is #YKTweetup.

I hope to possibly set up a site where it will show the feed for #yktweetup so we all know when someone is planning or attending a Tweetup here in our little town.
